To truly understand the depth of this tradition, it's necessary to go back to prehistory, when the area was already inhabited by communities who had developed a practical knowledge of clay working.

The Eneolithic civilization of Laterza

One of the most important references is represented by the so-called Eneolithic civilization of Laterza, which developed between the 3rd millennium BC and the early Bronze Age. This culture takes its name from the Laertine territory, a testament to the area's archaeological significance. Finds in the necropolises and cave settlements have yielded numerous ceramic artifacts, representing some of the earliest evidence of the use of worked clay in this region.

Function and first decorative elements

The Eneolithic pottery of Laterza is distinguished by simple yet functional forms, crafted by hand without the use of a wheel. The objects were generally intended for practical purposes, such as preserving food and liquids, but in many cases they also feature engraved or impressed decorations. These elements suggest that, even in prehistoric times, ceramics were not just a utilitarian tool, but also a means of expression linked to the culture and symbols of the community.

Primitive processing techniques

The manufacturing techniques were based on elementary processes: clay was collected locally, shaped by hand, and fired in rudimentary structures. Despite the simplicity of the tools, the finds show a surprising attention to proportion and functionality.

Evolution between the Bronze and Iron Ages

With the transition to the Bronze Age and then the Iron Age, the use of ceramics continued to evolve. Local communities developed greater specialization in working with materials, and ceramic production became increasingly widespread. However, information on these phases remains fragmentary, based primarily on archaeological finds.

Ceramics in Roman times

During the Roman era, the Laterza area was part of a broader economic system in which ceramic production took on a structured role. Roman ceramics, often mass-produced, were used for trade and food preservation. While it's not possible to attribute all local production to specific kilns with certainty, it's plausible that the area was involved in these activities, given the widespread use of ceramics throughout the Roman world.

Continuity in the medieval period

During the medieval period, documentation becomes scarcer, but it's likely that clay processing never completely ceased. The continued use of ceramics in everyday life suggests the presence of local artisans, although this isn't always documented.

The first professional figures (15th-16th century)

It is between the end of the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance that more concrete evidence of the production begins to emerge ceramics in Laterza. Archival sources from the 15th and 16th centuries report the presence of professional figures linked to the working of clay, identified with terms such as fig tree, stazzonaro And ruagnaro. These craftsmen were engaged in the production of terracotta objects intended for everyday use.

Functional production and first aesthetic signs

At this stage, ceramics were still predominantly functional. Food containers, tableware, jugs, and liquid containers were produced. However, decorative elements began to appear, a sign of a progressive evolution in taste and technical expertise.

An interesting aspect concerns the distinction between different types of production. The terms used in the documents suggest a specialization between those who produced simple artifacts and those who began crafting more refined products. This differentiation represents one of the first signs of a more organized production system.

The economic context of the sixteenth century

During the 16th century, Laterza's ceramic production was part of a changing economic context. Population growth and the growth of commercial activities fostered a greater demand for artisanal goods. At the same time, contacts with other production centers contributed to the diffusion of new techniques and decorative patterns.

From terracotta to majolica

It is in this context that the foundations for the transition from simple terracotta to majolica were laid. Before the introduction of tin glaze, ceramics were often glazed or left unglazed, with limited decoration and less vibrant colors. However, the progressive acquisition of technical skills led local artisans to experiment with new solutions.

The 1604 contract and the technical turning point

A particularly significant document is the 1604 apprenticeship contract, which attests to the teaching of color and glaze techniques. This transition marks the definitive entry of Laterza ceramics into a more advanced phase, in which production is no longer merely functional but also takes on an artistic dimension.

Before this time, Laertine pottery was an evolving tradition, built on centuries of accumulated knowledge. From the essential forms of the Eneolithic civilization to the artisanal productions of the late Middle Ages, the common thread was the continuity of clay processing.

This continuity is one of the most important elements for understanding the subsequent rise of majolica. When, between the 16th and 17th centuries, Laterza ceramics reached levels of artistic excellence, it was not a sudden break, but the result of a long process of evolution.

In this sense, the origins of Laertina pottery cannot be reduced to a simple chronological starting point. Rather, they represent a complex system of knowledge, practices, and adaptations that developed over time, paving the way for one of Southern Italy's most significant ceramic traditions.

The Origins of Laterza Ceramics From the Eneolithic Civilization to Pre-Majolica Production Prehistoric Origins of Laterza Ceramics…

["post-7036","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.5 -
