Among these, the <strong data-start=\"784\" data-end=\"807\">turquoise monochrome<\/strong>, the so-called <strong data-start=\"822\" data-end=\"846\">\u201cwhites of Laterza\u201d<\/strong>, the use of <strong data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"884\">manganese browns<\/strong> and, at a later stage, the development of a <strong data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"957\">warm-toned palette<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"1091\">Understanding these elements means going beyond a simplified vision of Laertina ceramics and restoring its true complexity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70730818 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"70730818\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a674832 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3a674832\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\">\u00a0<\/p><p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\"><strong> The &quot;Whites of Laterza&quot;: a technical and stylistic definition<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\"><em>Late 16th century \u2013 early 17th century (circa 1580\u20131620)<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\">The expression <strong data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2126\">\u201cwhites of Laterza\u201d<\/strong> It is used in the historical-artistic field to indicate a specific type of majolica characterised by a particularly bright white background and essential decoration, often created with just a few colours.<\/p><p data-start=\"2350\" data-end=\"2515\">This production developed between the end of the seventeenth century and the first decades of the eighteenth century and is considered one of the most refined expressions of Laertina ceramics.<\/p><p data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2579\">The \u201cwhites\u201d are distinguished by some specific characteristics:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2581\" data-end=\"2764\"><li data-section-id=\"1m566jy\" data-start=\"2581\" data-end=\"2619\">very uniform enamelled surface<\/li><li data-section-id=\"w35d8b\" data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2663\">compact and bright shade of white<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1t40s54\" data-start=\"2664\" data-end=\"2714\">sober but extremely controlled decoration<\/li><li data-section-id=\"21g11l\" data-start=\"2715\" data-end=\"2764\">balance between empty space and pictorial sign<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2766\" data-end=\"2949\">Unlike other richer and more narrative productions, the \u201cLaterza whites\u201d focus on a reduction of decorative elements, leaving more space for the enamelled surface.<\/p><p data-start=\"2951\" data-end=\"3076\">This aspect is particularly relevant: white is not just a background, but becomes an active part of the visual composition.<\/p><p data-start=\"2951\" data-end=\"3076\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2cf49d96 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"2cf49d96\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36fbfce2 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"36fbfce2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\"><strong>The turquoise monochrome: a distinctive pictorial language<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"677\"><em>Early 17th century (circa 1620\u20131650)<\/em><\/p><p data-start=\"3147\" data-end=\"3351\">One of the most recognizable elements of the Laertina ceramic tradition is the so-called <strong data-start=\"3235\" data-end=\"3258\">turquoise monochrome<\/strong>, that is, the prevalent use of blue (in different intensities) to create the entire decoration.<\/p><p data-start=\"3353\" data-end=\"3657\">This style developed particularly in the 17th century and is closely linked to the tradition of istoriato. However, unlike the polychrome productions of other Italian centers, the blue monochrome is based on a different principle: achieving variety and depth through a single color.<\/p><p data-start=\"3659\" data-end=\"3851\">Technically speaking, turquoise derives from the use of cobalt oxide, one of the most stable and intense pigments in ceramics. This belief derives from the widespread diffusion of the <strong data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1363\">turquoise monochrome<\/strong> in the 17th century, which actually marked an important phase in local production.<\/p><p data-start=\"1457\" data-end=\"1533\">However, reducing Laertina pottery to just blue is historically incorrect.<\/p><p data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1596\">The sources and preserved artifacts clearly demonstrate that:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1810\"><li data-section-id=\"14p6rpt\" data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1648\">blue was dominant at a specific stage<\/li><li data-section-id=\"10ko4e7\" data-start=\"1649\" data-end=\"1697\">but it was never the only color used<\/li><li data-section-id=\"jvj9ap\" data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1751\">chromatic variations already existed in the seventeenth century<\/li><li data-section-id=\"fhl1nr\" data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"1810\">in the eighteenth century a much wider palette developed<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1812\" data-end=\"1865\">Blue is therefore <strong data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1846\">identity<\/strong>, but not exclusive.<\/p><p data-start=\"1867\" data-end=\"2000\">This distinction is also fundamental for a correct historical reading and to avoid simplified interpretations of tradition.<\/p><p data-start=\"1867\" data-end=\"2000\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6afcc0d e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" browns<\/strong>, often overlooked in simplified descriptions.<\/p><p data-start=\"3780\" data-end=\"3886\">Manganese is used to obtain shades ranging from dark brown to purple, even black.<\/p><p data-start=\"3888\" data-end=\"3924\">These colors are used for:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3926\" data-end=\"4019\"><li data-section-id=\"1v29fka\" data-start=\"3926\" data-end=\"3951\">outlines of the figures<\/li><li data-section-id=\"9nqqe\" data-start=\"3952\" data-end=\"3975\">decorative details<\/li><li data-section-id=\"ocjzf3\" data-start=\"3976\" data-end=\"4019\">structural elements of the composition<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"4021\" data-end=\"4151\">From a technical point of view, manganese offers a very stable yield during firing and allows for precise design definition.<\/p><p data-start=\"4153\" data-end=\"4214\">In many Laertine productions we observe a combination of:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4216\" data-end=\"4242\"><li data-section-id=\"f2tem0\" data-start=\"4216\" data-end=\"4228\">blue<\/li><li data-section-id=\"xctrqp\" data-start=\"4229\" data-end=\"4242\">manganese<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"4244\" data-end=\"4336\">This duotone allows you to enrich the
